Most officers in the N.C. Highway Patrol have not been accused of crimes. That’s about the best that can be said these days about an organization in which North Carolinians once took pride.
In recent weeks, troopers have been accused of crimes, immorality, favoritism, DWI and even mistreatment of a police dog. Four officers – that we know of – have been fired.
Still another trooper, who lost his job in 2003 when he was caught at adultery on the job, got a low-level judge to reinstate him on the grounds that, under a previous commander, other troopers had done the same thing and kept their jobs.
The state says it will appeal the ruling, and Gov. Mike Easley’s office vows that the amorous trooper won’t get his job back, no matter what a judge says. Good luck with that, governor. (more…)
