Easley: Colleges misread letter

Richmond Community College has admitted illegal immigrants into its programs.

Public Relations Director Anne Morris said Thursday, “Over the past decade, we have had less than 10 students, who may or may not have been legal residents earn GEDs.”

“Richmond Community College has not enrolled any illegal immigrants in our curriculum programs that lead to degrees or diplomas,” she said.

The issue of allowing illegal immigrants rose to the forefront earlier this month.

A system attorney told all 58 community colleges they must enroll undocumented individuals. The lawyer in part cited a 1997 letter written by Gov. Mike Easley’s office when he was attorney general.

Easley says state community college officials misread a letter that led them to require all campuses to admit illegal immigrants. But the Democrat won’t say whether he supports that policy. more…
