HUD Plans Demolition of an additional 4,600 Units of housing

 

There are more than 12,000 homeless in New Orleans living under bridges and in parks. Most were working and lived as renters in public and private housing. HUD a federal government agency has ordered the demolition of 4,600 units of public housing forcing thousands more into the streets. Organizations and supporters of Katrina and Rita Survivors across the country are showing their support for the residents of Public Housing in New Orleans. In North Carolina, actions were held in Greensboro on Wednesday targeting the Greensboro operations of a demolition company, D.H. Griffin that is contracted to demolish the public housing units in New Orleans. Supporters gathered in Halifax at the Halifax Historic Courthouse on Thursday. In Raleigh, supporters will hold a vigil at 5:30 pm on Friday, Dec. 21st, 2007 in front of the Municipal Building/City Hall on Morgan Street.
