Senate Minority Leader Martin Nesbitt expressed great frustration this morning at the latest overnight rewrite of the Senate budget. Nesbitt strongly attacked both the process involved as well as the substance of the new version that was apparently made available minutes before midnight last night.
Nesbitt accused the Senate Republicans of simply”rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic” by restoring proposed cuts of teachers’ aides while at the same time increasing so-called “discretionary cuts” elsewhere.
Nesbitt also criticized Republicans for inserting a long list of “special provisions” into the budget that are unrelated to spending and that have never been seen before in a substantive legislative committee.
The Senate President Pro Tem and the House Speaker will hold their own press conference at 1:00 pm.
