Monday numbers: A closer look at NC’s growing Latinx voter population

[1]It’s widely know that North Carolina’s Latinx population had been growing rapidly in recent years. But for those who may have only a general idea about the magnitude of this phenomenon, a  recent “must read” report from the research and advocacy organization Democracy North Carolina (“Emerging Electorate: Latinx Voters in North Carolina” [2]) shows just how rapid this growth has been and how it’s poised to make a bigger and bigger impact on the state’s elections.

The reports finds that the 2018 midterm election brought a surge of Latinx voters, and the group is expected to play an important role in the elections this year and in 2020.

Here are some notable numbers from the report:

11 – the percentage of North Carolina’s population that is Latinx

1 out of 6 – the number of North Carolinians under the age of 18 who are Latinx

2 out of 3 – the share of Latinx North Carolinians who are U.S. citizens

9 out of 10 – the share of Latinx North Carolinians under age 18 who are citizens

27 – the percentage of Latinx voters who reported voting in a midterm election for the first time  in 2018

35 – the percentage of Latinx voters who cast ballots in the 2018 midterm election

20 – the percentage that voted in 2014

75 – the percentage increase in Latinx voter turnout in North Carolina in the 2018 midterm election as compared to 2014

15 – the number of North Carolina counties in which the Latinx voter turnout rate was more than 40 percent in 2018

6.6 million – number of registered voters in North Carolina

Apx. 200,000 – number of registered voters who self-identify as Latinx

43 – percentage of Latinx voters in North Carolina who are registered Democrats

42 – percentage of Latinx voters in North Carolina are registered as unaffiliated

14 – percentage of of Latinx voters in North Carolina are registered Republicans

Less than 1 – percentage of Latinx voters in North Carolina are registered with the Green or Constitution parties

8.4 –percentage of pre-registered 16 and 17 year olds eligible to vote in the 2020 election who are Latinx
