Wake schools’ request may be cut

RALEIGH — Wake County could give the school system about $17 million less than it requested next year.
County Manager David Cooke told commissioners in a work session Monday afternoon that he is considering a 2005-06 budget proposal that would give the school system about $248.7 million next year.
That would be an increase of about $12 million from this year, but school board members said it would not be enough to keep up with growth and to replenish reserves spent last year.
That is only a preliminary figure, and he could change his mind before he finishes the budget proposal, Cooke said. But school board members said it was disappointing to hear that their request might be cut.
