Beck: Lottery revenue can’t replace other revenue

A Richmond County Schools official Tuesday expressed mixed feelings about the revived education lottery bill. Robert Beck, associate superintendent, said he is torn between his morals and what’s best for the school when it comes to a lottery in North Carolina. "I realize that the schools need added revenue. If there’s going to be a lottery, I believe the revenue should go to the schools," Beck said. He’s not sure how much money the lottery, if signed into law by a supportive Gov. Mike Easley, will generate for the county’s school system. "We were promised the lottery wouldn’t supplant other revenue," Beck said, adding if that’s the case, then the lottery will be a great thing for the school system. "If it does supplant other revenues, the lottery won’t do any good." (more…) |
