Cautious optimism greets lottery vote

Supporters celebrate victory, but school officials worry that funds may be diverted
Area education leaders greeted the legislature’s approval of a North Carolina lottery – and its promise of millions of dollars for public schools – with a mixture of hope and wariness.
When Gov. Mike Easley signs the bill this morning, North Carolina will join more than 40 states with a government-sponsored lottery. Supporters said they expected the $1 billion-a-year lottery to provide millions for new public schools, improved elementary education and college scholarships for the poor.
Jeannette Nichols, vice chairwoman of the New Hanover County Schools, said she was delighted, adding that the money was needed for school construction and technology. But she offered a caution. (more…)
