Senate rigs the game

Lottery backers, including Gov. Mike Easley, Lt. Gov. Beverly Perdue and Senate leader Marc Basnight, worked all year to gain a majority in the Senate and fell short by two votes. Only 24 out of 50 members lined up in support.
Last week, Basnight said he was giving up. He sent senators home and promised they were done for the year.
Then he changed course, calling the Senate back into session Tuesday.
Two senators didn’t make it. One was ill, the other was honeymooning. Both happened to be lottery opponents. (more…)
