Sanders was previous N.C. lottery opponent

RALEIGH, N.C. — The first chairman of the North Carolina State Lottery Commission actually opposed the lottery before it became the law, but still accepted Gov. Mike Easley’s request to head the panel.
Charles Sanders, a former chairman of Glaxo Inc. and unsuccessful 1996 U.S. Senate candidate, was among a group of North Carolina notables involved with Citizens United Against the Lottery.
Sanders is listed in the group’s steering committee, which also includes former University of North Carolina Presidents Bill Friday and C.D. Spangler, UNC basketball coach Dean Smith and Gov. Jim Martin.
Sanders didn’t return a phone call seeking comment Tuesday. But he told The News & Observer of Raleigh on Monday that Easley was aware of his anti-lottery stance before his appointment as lottery chairman. (more…)
