Bill favoring veteran car dealers under review

Gov. Mike Easley has less than a week to veto legislation that lawmakers passed in the 2005 session, and one of those bills could have a big impact on two eastern Wake County car dealerships.
House Bill 1227 includes a provision that allows only those dealerships that have operated in the same location for 50 years or longer to more than double their franchise territory for relocation. It would allow Universal Chevrolet in Wendell to move to a hot spot for development near the newly opened U.S. 64/264 Knightdale Bypass.
Carlos Wheeler, owner of J&M Chevrolet in Zebulon, said the provision puts his business at a competitive disadvantage because he doesn’t qualify. Wheeler got the provision removed from one House bill, only to find that lawmakers tucked it into another and passed it. (more…)
