Lottery no solution, Purser says

By KATHERINE MCDONALD CARTHAGE - The new North Carolina state lottery, much touted as a major source of revenue for public school capital needs, will provide much less than educators had hoped, according to Moore County Schools Superintendent Susan Purser.
"By the time the state whittles it down, we might receive less than $1 million (annually)," she recently told the Moore County Board of Education. "The lottery does not take care of facility needs in any locality."
Purser and Marty Trotter, school district chief officer for finance, commented on the lottery to the board in an update of schools and education bills from the last session of the state legislature.
"The public needs to understand that the lottery is not an answer to capital needs," Trotter said. "It’s a Band-Aid. One million dollars will not go very far." (more…)
