The federal gumshoes have issued subpoenas that seek a broad range of documents pertaining to Black’s political operations. This we know, thanks to the speaker’s decision to release the content of the subpoenas (he acted under pressure of a lawsuit filed by this newspaper and the Charlotte Observer, after the subpoenas’ existence had come to light), and more broadly thanks to North Carolina’s public records law.
Whether the feds will come up with anything that could use a spin cycle in the old Maytag is impossible to tell. But it would hard to explain to the average North Carolinian why he or she would be better off not knowing what it is that investigators find so interesting, and potentially incriminating, within the orbit of one of the state’s most powerful figures.
