RALEIGH - Gov. Mike Easley’s enthusiasm for tax reform is right up there with, say, his fondness for mold. Engineers recently discovered a mold infestation in the governor’s mansion that has driven the state’s first family out of the house while extensive renovations go on.
The mere mention of tax reform seems only to drive the governor — or at least his staff — up the wall. It’s a good topic to mention if you want to see some serious eye-rolling in the governor’s office.
But former Gov. Jim Hunt and a think tank he created two decades ago may push the Easley administration to think about it a lot more in 2006 than the governor or his staff would prefer. The Institute for Emerging Issues at N.C. State University in Raleigh — chaired by Hunt — has adopted tax reform as the chief topic of its 2006 attention. (more…)
