House Votes On License Overhaul

The House of Representatives approved legislation yesterday barring illegal immigrants from obtaining a driver’s license, something supporters say will strengthen homeland security.
"Ten states, including my state of North Carolina, issue valid driver’s licenses and identification cards without requiring proof of legal status. That is scary," said U.S. Rep. Virginia Foxx, R-5th, during debate. She was one of the more than 100 co-sponsors to the legislation.
"According to the 9/11 Commission Report, these travel documents are just as important as weapons are to terrorists," she said.
Immigration was a key issue in Foxx’s bitter GOP primary last year against Councilman Vernon Robinson of Winston-Salem. Robinson attacked Foxx’s vote in the N.C. Senate to allow tuition discounts for some legal immigrants. (more…)
