Judge retires; it’s the law

Retirement is not something John L. Whitley has been looking forward to. Given a choice, he’d just as soon keep working.
Though Whitley has two years left on his term as chief district court judge for the 7th Judicial District, he has reached the mandatory retirement age for N.C. judges. Whitley celebrated his 72nd birthday last week and Monday was his last day holding court.
"It’s not a matter of ‘want to,’" Whitley said Monday, "it’s a mandatory retirement situation. You’ve got to quit when they tell you to quit."
Whitley has been a judge since 1992 and previously was clerk of court.
"I hate to see him go," said N.C. Chief Supreme Court Justice I. Beverly Lake. "He’s been an outstanding judge with an outstanding record." (more…)
