Teacher-hiring plan preserves standards

A compromise in the General Assembly would expedite the hiring of out-of-state teachers to fill vacancies in North Carolina.
The plan contains the necessary elements of ensuring teacher competency without delaying the hiring process.
• Local school boards would exercise control over hiring.
• Local school boards would be responsible for verifying certifications and conducting evaluations.
• North Carolina teacher standards would not be waived or lowered.
The legislature and Gov. Mike Easley were at odds over the original proposal that, as Easley correctly observed, was not attentive to maintaining high standards.
Legislators and state education officials wrought a new proposal, one Easley finds acceptable. (more…)
