Let drug industry do its own shilling

To The Editor:
If anyone ever had a doubt as to the influence exerted by the drug industry over the health profession, I can assure you it is considerable.
Today, I received my new BlueCross BlueShield of North Carolina contract (with a $275 rate increase, of course). In addition, I received a friendly reminder that certain allergy medications will now require an increased co-payment.
So far, nothing out of the ordinary. However, what I saw next made me see red! Enclosed was a four-color advertisement from Wyeth Consumer Healthcare extolling the virtues of its over-the-counter substitute anti-histamine, Alavert, with — hold onto your hat — a coupon. (more…)
