DURHAM — Some local legislators are lining up behind a move to have the General Assembly offset an impending increase in the state’s gasoline tax.

State Reps. Mickey Michaux and Winkie Wilkins, both Durham Democrats, and Bill Faison, D-Orange, said Wednesday they believe the Legislature should hold a special session to address the 2.8-cents-a-gallon increase in the tax that’s scheduled to take effect at the start of the new year.

"With the way fuel prices are going right now, I think we need to try to get people a bit of relief," Michaux said.

He said he hadn’t formally joined a group of legislators pushing the idea of a special session, but that he’d "sign whatever is necessary to get it done."

Wilkins agreed.

"I would like to hold this particular increment in abeyance," he said. "It is the main thing that [constituents] are talking to me about. And I think I need to listen."

But other western Triangle legislators said there’s no need to rush.

"The Legislature needs to be in a data-gathering stage now and address this issue in the short session," said state Rep. Paul Luebke, D-Durham. (more…)

He was referring to a scheduled session of the General Assembly that’s supposed to begin May 9.
