Many seniors still confused over drug plan

Connie Mercer, a military retiree on Medicare, is balancing four health-care packages: in addition to his retirement and Medicare benefits, Mercer receives veterans benefits and has a third-party insurer.
Then there are his father and his mother-in-law to consider, both of whom require long-term health care and have their own benefits programs.
Mercer said that after attending a Part D information workshop at Guardian Care of Elizabeth City Tuesday night, he still isn’t sure how the new federal prescription drug assistance program fits in to the overall health-care coverage for himself and his family.
Thirty seniors and family members attended the information session.
"I’m just trying to get an understanding of the program and how it works," Mercer said. "But I’m only getting more confused."
