A Strong Justice

The N.C. Supreme Court justices who are graduates of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill learned all too painfully a few years back that their boss, Chief Justice I. Beverly Lake Jr., had a wicked sense of humor.
On the morning after Lake’s Wake Forest Demon Deacons had whipped the Tar Heels, they heard an intermittent thumping noise in the hallway.
With a straight face, the chief justice, dressed in a black and gold Wake Forest sweatshirt and dribbling a basketball, was paying a courtesy call on each and every Carolina fan in the office suite - never mentioning the game.
Today will be Lake’s last day on the job, and, in the state’s legal circles, the chief justice will be missed as much for his gracious, good-natured personality as for his considerable professional skills. Lake celebrated his 72nd birthday yesterday, and state law requires that he retire. On Feb. 6, Associate Justice Sarah Parker will take his place, at least until the November elections. (more…)
