Great idea gets man to the semifinals

A lot of people may claim they have one of the best ideas since sliced bread, but former Hendersonville resident Martin Johnson has more proof than most.
Last May, the 26-year-old was finishing his master’s degree studies in folklore at the University of North Carolina when he struck up a conversation with friends at a coffee shop about universal health care.
Talk turned to how to reform the U.S. health care system. And after doing some online research into the subject, the 1997 West Henderson High graduate came across an Internet contest at www.sinceslicedbread.com, designed to generate ideas to strengthen the economy while improving the day-to-day lives of working men and women.
Johnson’s idea to provide for full national health care within the next 30 years was among 22,000 entries in the contest sponsored by the Service Employees International Union.
He has made it to the semi-finalist in the contest and could win the $100,000 grand prize or $50,000 if he is one of the two runners up. (more…)
