Karen Gottovi . . . retiring?

One of the most influential public servants in New Hanover County’s recent history retires today.
Many newcomers won’t know Karen Gottovi, because she’s been working in Raleigh since 1997. But folks who lived here in the prior 20-some years should remember her well.
A former English teacher and librarian who helped start the local League of Women Voters and the Society for Masonboro Island, Gottovi studied the problems facing New Hanover County and decided to do something about them. During two energetic terms (1976-1984) as a New Hanover County commissioner, she and her colleagues shook up the place.
With no other way to dispose of its trash, the county built a state-of-the-art incinerator and landfill. It started building the sewer. It moved the library to an appropriate building. It tried, with less success, to plan for growth. (more…)
