Outlets approved for lottery sales

Karl Wolfer threw his hands up in excitement. “We’re approved,” he shouted to a coworker. “We’re approved!”
The Riverbend Market, which Wolfer operates, was one of 72 retailers in Craven County recently approved by the North Carolina Education Lottery to sell lottery tickets. More than 5,000 retailers applied statewide and about 1,000 have been approved so far.
Wolfer sees lottery tickets as a boon to business and had anticipated being able to sell them for some time.
“I’ll have to adjust my staffing, but it will be more than worth it,” he said.
A Florida native, he has had good experiences with the lottery in the past.
“The very first time I played, I won,” he said. “I only won $4.50, but it was the excitement of being able to win.”
Customers were also relieved to hear of the approval.
“I was hoping they’d sell them here so I don’t have to go into town,” said Mike Upton of River Bend.
“I would probably buy one or two (tickets),” added River Bend resident Pete Pittman.
But customer Ernest Thomas, a Craven County resident, said he would refrain from purchasing lottery tickets.
“This is the Bible Belt. The lottery is a form of gambling and I don’t gamble,” he said. “I believe its religiously incorrect.” (more…)
