RALEIGH, N.C. — Rep. Wilma Sherrill, a Republican budget-writer often at odds with the GOP establishment and a champion of sweeping domestic violence law changes, said Monday she won’t run for a seventh term.

Sherrill, R-Buncombe, was diagnosed last week with breast cancer, but she said in an interview the illness wasn’t the reason for her decision.

"I’m just really thankful that we got it," said Sherrill, 66. "I don’t think it’s a death sentence. I’m not through working for these people up here."

Rather, after being Division of Motor Vehicles commissioner from 1985 to 1991, she has grown tired of traveling between Asheville and Raleigh, she said.

Sherrill, who was first elected to the House in 1994, initially promised her family she would serve in the General Assembly for only 10 years, but she still ran for re-election in 2004 in the Republican-leaning district.

"I think I probably yielded to pressure two years ago," Sherrill said, but this year, "I’m older and stronger."

The Asheville Citizen-Times reported Sherill’s decision on its Web site early Monday, one day before the closing of the candidate filing period for legislative and other races. At least seven of the House’s 120 current members have decided to not seek re-election. Republicans Bill Porter and Charles C. Thomas of Asheville already have filed to run for Sherrill’s seat.
