At last: your chance to get suckered

For years, North Carolinians told pollsters they wanted a lottery. Today, they get it.
The well-paid staff that runs the lottery will get bonuses of up to $50,000 for creating a state gambling operation in record time. (The top staffers also get more time off than the ordinary state employees who aren’t in the business of urging people – many of them low-income folks – to gamble the grocery money.)
To be sure, others will profit, too. The lottery commission sent out a press release headed “Retailers Get Ready to Cash In on NC Education Lottery.” Specifically, they will keep 7 cents of every dollar they collect.
The release explains that “100 percent of the net proceeds” will go to education. The key word, of course, is “net.” (more…)
