Campaign focuses on dangers of drinking, driving
A new campaign will take a shot at curbing drunken driving among Hispanic men.
"Manejar borracho? No seas tonto muchacho!" read bumper stickers to be distributed to Hispanics in North Carolina. The slogan means: "Drive drunk? Don’t be a fool man!"
El Pueblo, a Raleigh-based nonprofit, devised the slogan to educate the population about the consequences of driving drunk.
El Pueblo’s campaign initially targets the Triangle, Triad and Charlotte areas but could expand across the state if it is successful. The purpose is to figure out whether education, enforcement or both curtail drunken driving among Hispanics.
In some parts of the state, the bumper stickers already are being distributed.
And in August, El Pueblo hopes to start distributing three booklets about the consequences of drunken driving in Hispanic centers, tienditas, clinics and hair salons.
Locally, Maria Ocasio Black, Hispanic services liaison for New Hanover County Schools, agreed to help but hasn’t received any bumper stickers yet. (more…)
