RALEIGH — There is no silver lining when it comes to financing $9.7 billion in needed school construction over the next five years in North Carolina, state officials say. They would like for the lottery to pay for it, but don’t expect it to happen.
A schools facility survey conducted by the N.C. Department of Public Instruction shows Wilson County’s portion of that figure is $23.9 million. Steady enrollment growth in Wilson County and across the state, along with the poor condition of some existing schools, are the main reasons for the needed new construction, according to the survey.
The projected $23.9 million pricetag for the Wilson County Schools will pay for a new elementary school and renovations to existing schools. According to the survey, $15 million will be spent for the new elementary school, $7.4 million for renovations to existing schools and $1.3 million is needed for furniture and equipment.
Wilson County School officials have said they would like for the new elementary school should be complete before the 2007-2008 school year, but a site for it has not yet been selected.
Ellis Williford, Wilson County manager, said he expects the county’s portion of lottery proceeds, which will become available in October, to cover the construction costs of the first elementary school. (more…)
