Wilson County elections officials are discussing what activities they should hold to help increase voter registration during the upcoming Voter Registration Awareness Month.
Voter Registration Awareness Month was an initiative approved by Gov. Mike Easley two years ago in an attempt to convince more people to become active in the voting process.
Ann Cone, elections director for Wilson County, would like to use Wilson Mall and the Wilson County Agricultural Fair as venues to display the county’s new elections equipment.
In May, Wilson County, along with many other North Carolina counties, used new elections machines to tally votes. The new touch-screen machines also feature a paper recorder to back up the electronic memory. Machines were purchased to come into compliance with new federal voting legislation. Cone said the board of elections has held demonstrations at each location.
At Tuesday’s Board of Election’s meeting, Brenda Avery, a board member, suggested initiating a voter registration drive throughout the county. Russ Britt, the only Republican member of the board, echoed Avery’s suggestion. He said not only should the county demonstrate its new machines at the mall and fair, but should also have voter registration cards available as well. (more…)
