BREVARD — Fifteen members of the political action group MoveOn.org gathered on the steps of the Transylvania County Courthouse at noon Wednesday to voice their disapproval of military spending on the Iraq war and set the blame on Congressman Charles Taylor.
Some held signs that read "Iraq = Fiasco" while another placard read "Enough is enough," but the unified message was that the group thinks too much money has been spent on the war effort during the past four years.
According to numbers supplied by MoveOn.org, the cost of the war to Taylor’s 11th Congressional District totals $579,977,258.
The group, which claims 150 Transylvania County members, said the money could have been better spent providing better education and affordable housing opportunities to local constituents.
"We’re not discounting the human costs of this war, but if we could have put the money into other programs it would have dramatically helped this community," said Kathleen Barnes of Transylvania County’s MoveOn chapter. "We hold Charles Taylor directly responsible for his part in this money going to the war."
