RALEIGH, N.C. - A former state Senate employee became a witness in the federal government’s case against Kevin Geddings, but not for what he saw inside the Legislative Building.
Frank Melchoir testified Thursday he was waiting tables at JK’s Restaurant in Raleigh the evening of Sept. 21, 2005, when House Speaker Jim Black, Scientific Games vice president Alan Middleton and company contract lobbyist Meredith Norris arrived.
"They came in, and I waited on them," Melchoir testified at Geddings’ fraud trial in Raleigh.
Melchoir, a former aide to Sen. Hamilton Horton, R-Forsyth, said he recognized Norris because they had worked together years earlier at the General Assembly. He also recognized Black. After viewing a photograph in court, Melchoir identified the third person as Middleton.
The three dined for about three hours, and their bill was $241.38, paid for by Norris, according to Melchoir.
Norris e-mailed Geddings asking him to call Middleton on an important matter three minutes before her credit card receipt shows she paid the restaurant bill, according to government evidence. (more…)
