RALEIGH — If you enjoy playing video poker, you might notice fewer machines around come Sunday.
That’s because Sunday is the day that the phase-out of video poker machines in North Carolina begins.
The video poker change is one of a handful of laws passed by the General Assembly that take effect Sunday.
Sen. Charlie Albertson, D-Duplin, has pushed for a video poker ban in North Carolina ever since the machines were outlawed in South Carolina in 2000. He believes the phase-out will be good for the state.
“It’s been a long process,” Albertson said. “It takes us a long time to get where we are. We’ll be a better place because of it.”
Currently, business establishments with video poker machines are allowed to have a maximum of three machines on their premises. Beginning Sunday, the maximum allowed by law will be two. It will drop to one, effective March 1, 2007. The phase-out will be complete July 1, 2007.
The phase-out and ban do not apply to machines operated under a tribal-state compact, such as the machines at the Cherokee casino. (more…)
