Partial to illegals

The barrage of pro-illegal immigration articles in the Oct. 24 N&O has finally swayed my opinion.
The heart-wrenching piece about children crossing the border illegally without their parents has made me totally forget the $771 million we spend on the education of illegals in North Carolina and the $70 billion U.S. citizens pay for illegal immigrants to live here each year.
The article about the father and daughter reunion made me ashamed that I was worried about those American workers whose wages are 15 percent lower because of illegal immigrants or the fact that illegal aliens have re-introduced fatal diseases that American medicine vanquished years ago, such as drug-resistant tuberculosis, malaria, leprosy, plague, polio and Chagas disease.
The Point of View article calling for in-state college tuition for illegals made me burst out in a chorus of "We Are The World" as I realized how ridiculous I had been to concern myself that only 8.6 percent of our poorest citizens’ children earn bachelor’s degrees. (more…)
