Incite without money

Here’s something I still don’t get. Why should state tax incentives be used to subsidize new industries coming to North Carolina or existing industries that want to expand?
My thoughts on the matter were rekindled the other day when I read in the Triangle Business Journal that state and local governments had promised Polo.com, the online arm of Polo Ralph Lauren, nearly $3 million in incentives for the company to come to High Point.
The company promises to build a $40 million distribution center and employ up to 250 people by 2010.
It just bothers me that companies whose execs make way over the average income for a Tar Heel resident are offered corporate welfare to set up shop here. It’s not as if these businesses are hurting. (more…)
