When Tina Motter decided to begin studying nursing almost a year ago, she scrambled to find a trusted place to care for Abby, her 1-year-old daughter, while she went to class.

Motter found the answer in KidSpot, a short-term child-care center close to her home at Silas Creek Crossing near Hanes Mall.

She said she felt comfortable with KidSpot’s video tracking, secured doors and friendly staff. She liked the idea that she could bring Abby in as needed, even on Saturdays and evenings. Once Motter paid a one-time registration fee of $20, the hourly charge was $5.75.

"If I didn’t have it, I’d pay a fortune for day care that I wouldn’t use," she said.

KidSpot had no direct drop-in competition in its seven-year run in Winston-Salem until a month ago, when BiziKidz opened a few miles to the north in the Sherwood Plaza shopping center.

Audrey Eggers owns the local BiziKidz cen-ter, officially Audrey’s Kids LLC. There is a separately owned BiziKidz operating in Greensboro.

"I’m pumped," Eggers said, raising a clenched fist, as she talked about parental interest in her business. "We’ve had 97 children registered in six weeks."

Eggers said she is not worried about competition from KidSpot because "we target different populations."

BiziKidz is counting primarily on custo-mers from the Sherwood Forest and Mount Tabor areas. Eggers charges a higher hourly rate - $8 - than her competitor but does-n’t require a registration fee.

By comparison, on a daily basis KidSpot has between 25 to 50 children playing and ambling about its large space, which is equipped with enough toys and diversions to keep most little minds occupied. (more…)
