Smart Start helps local kids before school age

Before children reach kindergarten they could already be behind in their education.
A partnership between child care facilities and county agencies is helping parents find the resources their tots need for classroom success.
Thousands of children in Southeastern North Carolina from age 0 to 5 benefit from Smart Start - a statewide public-private early childhood initiative that provides funding to improve child care facilities, increases access to health services and offers family support.
"When these things are in place children are going to do better in school and in life," said Janet Nelson, executive director of the New Hanover County Partnership for Children.
Smart Start programs in New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender counties work with various county departments like libraries, health departments and social services to meet children’s needs. Services include health checks, parent education, and training and technical assistance to licensed child care providers. (more…)
