Bowles: Education holds key

ASHEBORO — The need for an educated Randolph County, and the rest of North Carolina, through collaborative efforts was stressed Wednesday night by Erskine Bowles, president of the University of North Carolina system.
“We need to get more of our people educated,” Bowles told an audience of approximately 300 community leaders, educators, business people and residents attending the first community forum held at Asheboro High School’s Performing Arts Center.
“We’re in a crisis,” he said about the percentage of the N.C. population, over 35 years of age, with college degrees compared to younger citizens. In urban areas, 37 percent of people have college degrees and, in rural areas, less than 20 percent do.
“What about the next generation? … those watching the basketball game tonight,” he added in reference to Carolina hosting Ohio State in Chapel Hill.
Bowles said jobs of the future will be in countries like India or China because of investments being made there in research and education. “The global transformations are happening so fast that ‘dot-com’ looks like it’s standing still. (more…)
