RALEIGH - North Carolina’s two U.S. senators, Republicans Elizabeth Dole and Richard Burr, this week attempted to delay the planned election of a new state GOP chair in hopes of recruiting an alternative to the current candidates, who include interim chair Linda Daves of Charlotte.
The move reflects a push by some within the GOP to bolster the party’s fundraising ability and strengthen its ties to the business community. Democrats have outspent Republicans in statewide campaigns for years despite continuing growth in the GOP ranks.
The two senators backed off Wednesday, however, when Daves refused to postpone the vote.
"The meeting is going to happen," Daves said Wednesday. "This is a situation that is left up to the (party) executive committee."
Daves said she had only heard rumors of Dole’s and Burr’s request. Efforts to reach Dole and Burr were unsuccessful, but several elected and party officials confirmed the senators’ role in the dispute. (more…)
