N.C. legislative leaders approve money for Morgan legal fees

House Speaker Pro Tempore Richard Morgan will get public money to pay for legal fees he incurs while responding to a subpoena issued by a federal grand jury believed to be investigating Speaker Jim Black’s campaign fundraising and legislative activities.
Federal prosecutors want Morgan, R-Moore, to appear before a grand jury and turn over documents related to 37 individuals or groups, including Black and a cigarette company that gave money to a political group backing Morgan and other moderate GOP candidates.
The public dollars will cover only fees related Morgan’s official duties and those of his staff, and not any personal actions, said Amy Fulk, Senate leader Marc Basnight’s chief of staff. No cap has been placed on the expenses.
Morgan initially sought representation from the state Attorney General’s Office, which often represents state officials in public matters. But Chief Deputy Attorney General Grayson Kelley declined in November, saying it would create a conflict of interest since the office may be investigating similar matters. (more…)
