State wants to revamp schools

FAYETTEVILLE — Has North Carolina reached the point where its accountability testing of public school students is no longer meeting our needs?

Scotland County Schools Superintendent Shirley Prince thinks the accountability system has actually become "counterproductive."

Prince also told State Superintendent of Public Instruction June Atkinson Tuesday night in Fayetteville that the state curriculum has to be revamped if we want students to see value in what they learn.

Prince and Atkinson participated in the first of eight public forums the State Board of Education is holding across the state to explain the board’s new mission and goals for producing "future-ready" students. About 100 people representing school systems mainly in the southern end of the state attended.

Wilson County Schools has been discussing some of these same issues for over a year now as part of its efforts to improve its high schools so more students graduate with the skills needed to continue their education or enter the workforce.  (more…)
