Money sought to help schools cope with growth

Dr. Charles Maranzano bemoaned earlier this month that no one had come forward to offer federal funds to build schools in districts swamped with students from military growth.
Well, Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, Dr. Maranzano.
On Dec. 21, Sen. Elizabeth Dole of North Carolina and eight other senators wrote to the Office of Management and Budget asking for money in the 2008 federal budget to help military communities.
The president usually sends his proposal for the following year to Congress in January or February.
The letter acknowledged that building schools usually is a local responsibility, but an estimated 71,000 students will be dumped into about seven communities by 2011. Maranzano, the superintendent in Dinwiddie, Va., has made those points as the national spokesman for the Seven Rivers Coalition.
“We believe an initial infusion of funding is necessary and appropriate to allow impacted school systems to meet construction costs that will be incurred before revenue from local taxes, bond efforts and state support can be realized,” ( the senators wrote. (more…)
