North Carolina legislators are launching a study of their own after an audit found taxpayers paying at least $360,000 a year in questionable charges for retreaded tires used on school buses and other state vehicles.
The study will compare the retread process used by the company holding the state’s $2 million-a-year contract, White’s Tire of Wilson, with that used by competitors to see which is more economical and durable.
The General Assembly’s transportation oversight committee ordered the study because two state agencies responsible for most retread purchases weren’t cooperating on a similar analysis, said State Rep. Nelson Cole of Reidsville, who serves on the committee.
"The Department of Transportation wants to do its own study, and we’ll let them do that," said Cole, a Democrat. "But they didn’t want to involve the Department of Public Instruction. Well, DPI is the largest user of these tires."
Retreaded tires are put on the rear wheels of thousands of school buses statewide. Until recently, school districts were required to buy the retreaded tires from White’s Tire. (more…)
