Courts, Regulators Deal Setbacks to NC Consumers

Quick Take:

  • Last week, the state Supreme Court made it much harder for victims of predatory mortgage lending to enforce state consumer protection laws.
  • Earlier this month, the state Utilities Commission permitted natural gas customers to be penalized for not using enough gas at all times of the year.
  • Together, these cases may signal the need for a new round of aggressive consumer advocacy by state lawmakers during the 2007 session.
