Butterfield wants to honor former slave

The face of George Henry White -the last former slave to serve in the U. S. House of Representatives - will grace a postage stamp if Congressman G. K. Butterfield’s new bill succeeds.
White’s life and accomplishments would be recognized through the legislation that was proposed Monday on the anniversary of his last speech before Congress.
Butterfield said White “fearlessly and consistently stirred the conscience of America to embrace racial justice and equality for all people. It was a life worth remembering.”
Also pending is a request the Congressman wrote last year to the Citizens Stamp Advisory Committee. He asked that White be honored through the Black Heritage stamp series.
Butterfield previously succeeded in naming the Tarboro Post Office after White.
During two terms in the North Carolina General Assembly, the Bladen County native was best known for his struggles on behalf of African-American schools. (more…)
