N.C. House committee wants property commission abolished

A state surplus property panel that has been unable to generate a single sale since being formed in 2004 would be abolished immediately in legislation that a House committee approved Thursday.
The North Carolina Commission on State Property is charged with evaluating unused or forgotten state land or buildings and determine whether it should be sold, generating revenues for both state and local governments. But the commission doesn’t actually sell the property, and its work has been hampered by politics, resistance from other agencies and ethics questions.
Another bill would have replaced the current commission with a new panel that supporters say would be more accountable to the state. But the House Ways & Means Committee decided to wait on whether to create something new, said Rep. Jim Harrell, D-Surry, the chairman.
