Negative ads worthy of a political campaign are attacking proposals to let North Carolina cities and counties decide whether to tax the sale of real estate.
But what the ads don’t mention is the likely alternative: higher property taxes.
In North Carolina, property taxes provide the main support for schools, parks, utility lines, jails, public health, law enforcement and other basic facilities and services.
When local officials have to spend more to accommodate new residents, they’re pressured to raise property taxes on everybody. Everybody pays more, every year, year after year. That includes older people on fixed incomes who, if their longtime homes happen to be in newly popular areas, may be unable to afford the rising taxes. (more…)
