RALEIGH — Senate Democrats on Tuesday debuted a state budget plan loaded with money for building projects at Western North Carolina universities.
It finds the money for construction, much more than in the budget approved by the House, by piling up $1.2 billion in debt.
“It’s critical that Western North Carolina have a role in the medical economy of this state,” said Sen. Joe Sam Queen, who pushed for funding for Western Carolina University to build a health sciences facility.
State universities in WNC would get nearly $100 million for building projects under the budget proposal. That includes money for renovations in the two oldest buildings on the UNC Asheville campus.
Though the Senate wants to spend more borrowed money than the House, it would have less money on hand to spend on other items, constrained by Senate leaders’ determination to let two tax increases expire.
The plan, which cleared committees Tuesday ahead of a vote in the full Senate today, is notable also for what it leaves out. (more….)
