Many manufacturing officials in North Carolina believe that the state’s economy is on the wrong track, but more pro-business policies could help matters, according to a poll released yesterday at a summit held by the N.C. Chamber.
The summit itself drew about 350 economic and manufacturing officials to Grandover Hotel and Conference Center in Greensboro.
About 45 percent of the 300-plus poll participants said that the state’s economy is on the wrong track, 43 percent said that it was on the right track, and 12 percent were undecided. The poll was taken in early May.
The prognosis was dimmer among poll participants from the Triad - 52 percent said that the state’s economy is off track.
To get the state’s economy back on course, speakers at the summit said, more business-friendly legislation and regulation, particularly over taxes and health-care costs, are needed to promote capital investment and job creation. About 67 percent of the poll participants said that state and local taxes on businesses are too high, and 53 percent said that high taxes are a direct deterrent to growth. (more…)
