Bill will keep N.C. government running for another month

The General Assembly gave its final approval early Friday to a stopgap spending plan to keep state government running for another month while negotiators struggle to fashion a final budget for the new fiscal year that starts this weekend.
By a 21-6 vote, the Senate voted a second time in support of the "continuing resolution" for the government to keep operating largely at current spending levels. The plan also keeps in place through July 31 a quarter-penny on the sales tax, an issue that briefly threatened to derail the plan and hamper budget negotiations.
The Senate initially approved the measure Thursday, then returned for an unusual late-night session to meet constitutional requirements for tax-related bills. House Speaker Joe Hackney then ratified the bill in a mostly empty chamber of the House, which approved the measure earlier in the week. (more…)
