Smithfield’s N.C. plant gets renewed state permit

The Associated Press TAR HEEL, N.C. - The world’s largest hog slaughtering plant has received a renewed state permit that will allow it to kill even more hogs.
The state Division of Water Quality on Thursday renewed the water usage and discharge permit for Smithfield Packing Co.’s processing plant in Bladen County. The new permit allows the plant to slaughter 9.5 million hogs annually, up from the slightly less than 8.5 million that it now slaughters.
The permit also restricts the company’s water usage and the amount of pollution it can put into the Cape Fear River.
"It sounds like they granted pretty much what we were asking for," Smithfield spokesman Dennis Pittman said Thursday. He had not seen details of the permit because he was traveling. (more…)
